Prof.M.Ravishankar DA., MD, FRCP (Glasgow)

DEAN, Mahatma Gandhi Medical College and Research Institute (MGMC&RI) Puducherry.
Prof. Ravishankar is one of the eminent anaesthesiologists in India and currently the Dean at Mahatma Gandhi Medical College and Research Institute. He holds additional responsibility as Professor of Anaesthesiology, Director of Medical Simulation center, coordinator International Training Centre of American Heart Association, and Chairman of Quality control and Patient safety at MGMC&RI.

His achievements include establishing state of the art Department of Anaesthesiology and training to giving care at world standards from the year 1995, upgrading the Department of Cardio-thoracic Anaesthesia and establishment of Critical Care Unit at JIPMER, Puducherry.

He was involved in digitisation of health records in JIPMER from 1993 – 97. His special interest is computer applications in anaesthesia practice. He is presently focussing on training undergraduates and postgraduates with scenarios mimicking real time sequencing of emergency situations using high fidelity simulators.

He has the following honours

  • Nominated as one of the ‘Board of Directors’ in Asia Ventilation Forum in Shanghai, China in June 2007.

  • Former member of Bureau of Indian standards (BIS) for formulating specifications for anaesthesia equipment.

  • Has been honoured with “Lifetime Achievement award for progress of anaesthesia in India” by the British Association of Indian Anaesthetists in 2007.

  • Member customer advisory board, GE, 2010.

  • Awarded FRCP by the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Glasgow, 2012


Dr. Ravishankar was honoured with “Lifetime Achievement Award” for outstanding contribution in the field of anaesthesiology at 29th Annual south zone ISA conference – PONSZAC 2013. He organized many conferences and served as a resource person in more than 100 programs all over the country. He has published around 75 articles in reputed medical journals and is guiding many projects. He was nominated as National Mentor for propagating Inhalational â€‹anaesthesia especially Low flow anaesthesia using GasMan simulations.

Though highly qualified in his own field, he had a sustained interest in the engineering field, in the form of designing breathing systems, anaesthesia machines, ventilators and computer applications in anaesthesia.
